Saginaw Valley State University Coding Competition (Friday, March 3, 2017)
The High School Programming Competition is held every year on Saginaw Valley's campus. It is sponsored by the local student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, Saginaw Valley's Office of Admissions, and the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology's Computer Science and Information Systems Department. High school students in teams of three come from all around Michigan to compete against each other. They are given a series of problems of varying difficulty to solve programmatically using C++, Java, Python. Please Note that visual basic is NOT included anymore!
Cost will be part of the transportation if we need to charter a bus. If our numbers are small enough to drive in a school-rented van, then Dr Schwamb may pay for part of it. No real idea of what it would cost. If we had 30 kids attend would be no more than $20 each
likely closer to $10. As always, if there is anyone with financial challenges, we have ways to work around that so don't opt out for money-reasons!
I think this would be a great opp to see a different school, try some coding with a team (3-person teams), get lunch and a shirt and miss a day of school on a Friday! :) (NOTE - we know that the RatPack830 has a competition on this day as well! )
SO please let Mr Behmer know ASAP if you/your student is intending to attend!
Tentative Schedule:
0700am - Depart Huron HS
0830am - arrive SVSU for check in (Competitors pick up shirts!)
0900am - Welcome to SVSU/ACM CS
0945am - Break to Practice/Warmup rooms
1030am - Breakfast
1045am - Contest Rules then competition
0215pm - Awards & Lunch
0245pm- Depart for A2.
0415pm(ish) arrive back in A2!

2017/02/22 HIDDEN FIGURES
The Huron HS Computer Science classes are attending a public showing of the outstanding movie Hidden Figures on Weds. Feb 22 at the Rave Theater in Ann Arbor. Our show time is 10am!
Thanks to the generosity of Dr Schwamb and the Huron PTSO, we will have our transportation - not an insignificant amount - covered! Student cost is $7 and if possible, I'd like to collect that on Tuesday, so I can purchase tickets after school instead of waiting in line on the day of the movie! If you have financial hardships, let me know via email and we can resolve that too!
Parents are welcome to join us either as chaperones (please email me asap if you are interested!) or just as paying customers at the theater. It is not a 'private showing' so the general public is able to attend as well!
It is a bit of 'last minute' to pull this off but that is primarily due to my own lack of familiarity with field trip protocol (who takes a math field trip anyway? :) as well as absences by people in the building who have to sign off on the paperwork, etc. And of course we have no school on Monday, removing a day of preparation! SO, in order to get a sense of the number of students planning on attending, please go to this GoogleForm and complete with your student's data! Please do so regardless of if you are going or not! There are buttons for Yes/No on the form!
